How to Pick a Giveaway Winner on Instagram (Step by Step)
Close entries at the time you announced, paste the post link into a random comment picker, draw the winner plus a couple of backups, check the winner against your rules, then announce publicly. The whole draw takes under a minute.

What do you need before you pick a winner?
You need three things: a public Instagram post or Reel with the entries in its comments, the rules you published with the giveaway, and a random picker that does not ask for your Instagram password. The GiveawayPicker Instagram picker only needs the post link, because comments on a public post are already visible to anyone.
If the account that ran the giveaway is private, a picker cannot read its comments. Switch the account to public for the draw, or copy the entrant names into the random name picker instead.
How do you pick an Instagram giveaway winner, step by step?
Picking an Instagram giveaway winner takes seven steps, and only the draw itself is done by the picker; the rest is checking and communicating.
- Close entries on time. Wait until the deadline in your caption has passed, then add a comment or edit the caption to say entries are closed. Comments posted after that point should not count.
- Copy the post link. In the Instagram app, tap the three dots on the post and choose Copy link. Links to posts (/p/…) and Reels (/reel/…) both work.
- Paste it into the picker. Open the Instagram giveaway picker and paste the link. The tool shows the post it found so you can confirm it is the right one.
- Choose how many winners to draw. Set the count to your number of prizes plus one or two backups. The picker draws up to five accounts in one draw and never picks the same account twice.
- Run the draw. The picker removes duplicate entries so each account counts once, then selects winners with a cryptographic random number generator.
- Check the winner against your rules. Open the winning profile and confirm the entry meets every condition you published. If it does not, move to the next name in the draw order.
- Announce and contact the winner. Reply to the winning comment or post a Story naming the winner, then send a DM with how to claim the prize and a deadline to reply.
How long does each step take?
The draw takes under a minute; most of the time in picking a winner goes into checking eligibility and waiting for the winner to reply.
| Step | Typical time | Who does it |
|---|---|---|
| Close entries | 1 minute | You |
| Load the post and draw | Under 1 minute | The picker |
| Check eligibility | 2–5 minutes per winner | You |
| Announce publicly | 5 minutes | You |
| Winner confirms | Whatever deadline you set, often 48–72 hours | The winner |
Why draw backup winners at the same time?
Winners sometimes fail a rule, never reply, or turn out to be a duplicate account. If you draw a replacement later, followers can reasonably ask whether you drew until you liked the result. Drawing the backups in the same draw fixes the order in advance: winner one gets the prize, and if they are disqualified it passes to winner two, then winner three.
What does the picker check, and what do you check?
A random comment picker is good at the mechanical part and blind to the rest. Splitting the work this way keeps the result both random and valid.
| Check | Handled by |
|---|---|
| One entry per account, however many comments | The picker, automatically |
| An unbiased random selection | The picker, automatically |
| No account picked twice in one draw | The picker, automatically |
| Winner follows the required accounts | You, on the winner's profile |
| Winner tagged the right number of friends | You, in the winning comment |
| Winner meets age and country limits | You, when they claim the prize |
What if the post has thousands of comments?
On GiveawayPicker, a free draw reads the most recent comments on the post, which covers every entry on most small and medium giveaways. On a very large post that means the pool is a portion of the thread rather than all of it. If you need every comment in the pool, a subscription scans the whole post and removes the one-draw-a-day limit.
How should you announce the winner?
Announce the winner publicly, by handle, with a recording of the draw, so followers can see the prize was really awarded.
- Screen-record the draw from pasting the link to the result, and post the recording to your Story.
- Name the winner by handle in a reply to their winning comment, so others can see the entry was real.
- Say when the winner must reply by and what happens if they do not, matching the backup order you already drew.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pick an Instagram giveaway winner for free?
Yes. GiveawayPicker gives every visitor one free draw a day on a public Instagram post or Reel, with no signup and no login, and each draw can pick up to five winners.
Do I need to give my Instagram password to pick a winner?
No. Comments on a public post are visible to anyone, so a picker only needs the post link. Treat any tool that asks for your Instagram login just to read comments as a risk to your account.
Does commenting more than once increase someone's chances?
Not on GiveawayPicker. The picker removes duplicate entries so each account is entered once, whatever number of comments it left. If your rules allow one entry per comment, say so in the caption and use a tool that counts every comment separately.
Can I pick a winner from a private Instagram account?
No picker can read comments on a private account without logging in as you. Make the account public for the draw, or collect the entrant names and draw them in a random name picker.
What should I do if the winner doesn't respond?
Give the prize to the next backup winner from the same draw once your stated reply deadline passes, and say so publicly. This is why drawing backups at the same time as the winner matters.
Can I pick more than one winner on Instagram?
Yes. Set the number of winners before drawing. GiveawayPicker picks up to five different accounts in one draw, which covers several prizes or a winner plus backups.
The Instagram giveaway picker is free, needs no login and picks up to five winners from a public post in one draw.
